Between 2013 and 2017, Dr. Eszter Horváth and Dr. Zsófia Rácz participated in an international project that focused on the origin and trade of red garnet stones popular in the Early Middle Ages, their craftsmanship and the techniques of inlaying, as well as the symbolic significance of these objects (project leader: Dr. Dieter Quast, RGZM Mainz).
In this research, which extended from the British Isles and Scandinavia to India, researchers from ELTE examined the quality and cultural connections of Avar-period (6th–7th century) garnet-inlaid jewellery.
