Library

Our Institute’s library is a nationally significant specialized archaeological library. Except for the Institute’s teachers/staff and students, readers need permission to use the library, which can be granted by the Institute’s instructors (a form is available at the library).

Thanks to renovations, organization, and continuous development since 2002, the library’s collection currently comprises nearly 40,000 volumes. The collection includes about 28,000 books and 13,000 periodicals. In addition, the theses and dissertations of the Institute’s students and researchers amount to approximately 1,200 volumes. During the ongoing development of the library, besides acquisitions from external sources and the latest specialized books, the library maintains exchange relationships with several domestic and foreign institutions. Beyond books and periodicals, the collection of offprints includes about 4,000 items. Thanks to the Institute’s doctoral scholarship and undergraduate students, the library’s digital holdings are also continuously expanding.

Since 2018, the Alföldy Géza Epigraphy Library has been an integral part of our Institute’s library. With more than 6,000 volumes, it is one of the largest and most significant specialized epigraphy libraries internationally.

Books and periodicals are accessible in six rooms of the library, as since the reorganization in 2002, the library operates a free-shelf system. The collection is arranged chronologically and then subdivided topographically within the rooms. Thanks to the specialized arrangement, books, periodicals, and offprints can be easily found, while the electronic database and librarians provide further assistance in searching.

The Institute’s Library is also an active hub of the institute’s life. It frequently hosts meetings, lectures, and institutional events.
