Bachelor's Degree Program
The archaeological training, which begins already in the first semester, consists of two clearly distinct components: general archaeological education and specialization-based training. Archaeology has traditionally been taught according to areas of specialization (Prehistoric Archaeology, Classical [Greek-Roman] Archaeology, Archaeology of the Roman Provinces, Migration Period Archaeology, Medieval Archaeology, Archaeology of Ancient Near East, Archaeometry), and each student must choose two specializations.
The general training includes introductory lectures on various historical periods, as well as courses on archaeological methodology, scientific methods in archaeology, geographic information systems (GIS), fieldwork techniques, topography, and museology. Specialization-based training consists of thematic core lectures, seminars, material culture classes, and elective courses, which allow for an in-depth study of more narrowly defined topics.
As part of the BA program, students acquire the practical skills required for fieldwork through excavation practice at the Institute’s own archaeological digs. The program concludes with comprehensive exams, a thesis, and a final examination.
