The Polish lowlands are the northernmost region of the distribution of the Danubian cultures. Because of this remote location it has been regarded as not well suited for the first farming communities. Cultural patterns from the south have been used to describe the development of local groups which have been interpreted as results of ongoing migration waves. The lecture will discuss the current state of research on the 5th millennium BC in the Polish Lowlands, especially Kuyavia. Archaeological data indicates drastic changes after the end of the LBK, starting with the demise of stable settlements replaced by small, short-lived, dispersed households in the first half of the millennium. In the second half of the millennium completely new social, cultural and economic order appears in form of large settlements of iconic longhouses of the Brześć Kujawski type. The lecture will discuss how much these transformations represent local development or interregional influences.
